FCBD 2016: Diva's Annual Nerd Comic Book Run

Anyone who thinks you don't need to have stamina when you're a geek probably has not tried going for a Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) Run, Red Dot Island-style.

Not only does one have to persevere through the suffocating heat and humidity, you will need solid biceps and core strength to carry those free comic books from venue to venue.

For the last 5 years, Red Dot Diva has been going around the island's stores and hunting down comic books on FCBD. Since last year, she decided to target only two participating stores.

TARGET #1 - Kinokuniya Takashimaya
The night before, being typically kiasu, Red Dot Diva, Max and Jas had strategized to be at the Kinokuniya collection line early in the morning.

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) 2016 is barely two weeks away!

The yearly event where geeks can nab free comics at participating local stores is held on the first Saturday of May. Which means that on 7 May, Red Dot Diva and her geek buddies will be going about different shops getting comics for free. It is a great way to get introduced to new titles or creators, and fans are already strategizing on what's the optimal way to get these free comics!

Details of what's happening at each store have yet to be announced yet. However, you can LIKE the FCBD Singapore Facebook Page and look out for updates.

If you will be joining in the fun for the first time this year, check out what Red Dot Diva and her friends did for FCBD last year.

Following the tradition in the last couple of years, Red Dot Diva is holding an FCBD Online Contest! 1 selected winner with the most interesting entry will get to win some very nice swag.

FCBD 2015 - Two Local Shops; So Much Swag!

FCBD (Free Comic Book Day) is the kind of special Saturday where all the geeks are out in full force, visiting their favourite stores and hunting down free comics.

This year, Red Dot Diva and her friends went to two places - the Kinokuniya main store and local favourite, GnB Comics.

Kinokuniya opens at 10 AM, but the FCBD waiting line started more than 2 hours earlier! Out from the geek gang, Sarahcoldheart and Maxsterism were the earliest, with Jas joining them about half an hour later.

Red Dot Diva missed her bus and was nearly caught in a heavy downpour, and arrived at the store at about 8:40 AM. By then, there were already about 25-30 people in line.

Where You Can Nab Those Freebies on FCBD 2015!

FCBD (Free Comic Book Day) is a day away!!!

This year, participating shops have been a little late in their respective announcements, plus there aren't any special overseas guests heading to Red Dot Island for the weekend. However, Red Dot Diva has a rundown of who's giving out what (other than FREE comics, of course!) this coming Saturday, 2 May.

One will also notice a strong Star Wars theme featured in this Saturday's activities. That is because the island will also be celebrating Star Wars Day, i.e. May the 4th slightly early over the weekend! (More on that later in a separate article!)

Comic book geekdom has been getting more and more mainstream, thanks to popularity of superhero movies and TV shows. Red Dot Diva has noticed that the number of people participating in FCBD has grown significantly with each passing year.

The free comics given out on FCBD are not unlimited in supply, so they do run out in some places quicker than one can imagine. Therefore, if one is intending to set aside Saturday especially for an island-wide FCBD fun-run, DO plan your schedule carefully!

Here's a list of hot spots where one can head to to get your free comics:

FCBD 2014 - Hot Comics and Hot Guests On A Super Hot Day!

This year, Red Dot Diva's FCBD kicked off earlier than usual.

On Friday May 2, the night before FCBD, she joined several of GnB Comics' members and friends as well as their special comic book artist guests - Ivan Reis, Alan Quah and Sheldon Goh - at Shaw Lido for the movie screening of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" in 2D.

From what she heard, most of the guests had arrived in Red Dot Island only hours before the movie night, and Ivan Reis and his wife were practically transported immediately from airport to Shaw House for the event by the GnB folks.

Come Celebrate FCBD Singapore 2014 With Ivan Reis And Other Guests!

Doesn't time fly when you are having fun??

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is merely 3 weeks away! And the usual suspects have been announcing their in-store guests who will be meeting fans on Saturday, 3rd May.

The big surprise for this year's FCBD guest list has got to be GnB Comics' announcement that Brazilian comic artist Ivan Reis will be making his way to Red Dot Island! You could feel the squees from local fanboys reverberating around the island.

Ivan Reis has worked with both Marvel and DC, but is widely appreciated known for his artwork on DC releases like the mini-series "Blackest Night" and "Brightest Day", as well as The New 52's "Aquaman" run together with Geoff Jones. Ivan is currently doing the artwork for "Justice League".

FCBD 2013: The Day When Diva Grabbed Free Comics (and Iron Man)

This is the third FCBD year that Red Dot Diva nerded out and went store-hopping for free comics.

There were plans to meet super early for breakfast with pals, but she forgot to charge her batts after the previous night's epic geek showdown with writer Adam Glass. And so, morning kopi was downed at home while rushing around getting her things ready for a day of free comic book shopping.

Having learned their tough lesson from last year, Red Dot Diva, Melvin, Alvin from Here Be Geeks and Sarah, made sure that Kinokuniya mainstore was their very first FCBD stop, before all the packs of free comics ran out.

A Spooky Q&A With Dave Chua - Writer of "The Girl Under The Bed"

Local readers may already be familiar with Dave Chua's award-winning novella "Gone Case" which was adapted into two graphic novels recently. The graphic novels - which depicted a boy's coming of age story in the very heartlands of the  HDB landscape - were a collaboration with artist Koh Hong Teng.

Both books were well-received by local readers mainly because it spoke right to the heart of the true-blue Red Dot Islander. Even more so when the books were visualized by Hong Teng, whose amazing artwork were so detailed and vivid.

This time round, in Epigram's graphic novel "The Girl Under The Bed" (with young artist Xiao Yan), Dave Chua turns to another favourite genre of his - horror. Despite being set during the Hungry Ghost Festival or "7th month" (in Hokkien), the story is also another realistic, coming-of-age tale of a teenage girl.

Red Dot Diva lays out some glittery offerings so that Dave will reveal what lies behind the spooky tale.

FCBD 2013: More Artist Appearances Announced!

Two local comic stores have now announced their FCBD artist guests for this Saturday!

And there should be more than enough time during the day to catch both sets of guests, if one desires to.

So who are the artists who will be doing sketches, signings and meeting Red Dot Island fans?

Check this list out!

FCBD 2013: "Supernatural" and "Suicide Squad" Fans - Meet Adam Glass in Singapore!

It's not too often that a writer of a popular TV series or comic or novel visits our Red Dot Island.

But this Friday 3rd May, as part of Kinokuniya's FCBD and "Meet The Writer" program, local fans will get a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet someone who is both a comic book writer (DC's "Suicide Squad"/ Marvel's "Deadpool: Suicide Kings") and a staff writer on CW's  long-running TV series called Supernatural -  a drama show about two brothers (and other very bromance-y characters) who kick-butt in heaven, hell and everywhere in between.

Yep, you got it. The guest of the evening will be Adam Glass!

Red Dot Diva managed to catch hold of Adam earlier this week before he bravely endured a super-long flight here to say hello to local fans. What transpired was the fastest interview Red Dot Diva has ever done online: a Q-and-A quick-draw carried out on Twitter .

FCBD 2013: So What Will Be Happening On 4th May?

This year's Free Comic Book Day (FCBD), which falls on 4 May, seems to be more muted than last year.

Well, for one thing, Harris Planerds - hailed as the bookstore for geeks - closed its doors late last year. And there have been no early excited hints of well-known comic guests making appearances at stores like GnB or Invasion. YET.

That leaves Kinokuniya - the only other bookstore chain with a geek-worthy stock of graphic novels - to create some hype for FCBD. From the details released in Kinokuniya's April e-newsletter, one would have noted that they were the first to promote any kind of the local FCBD events at all!

The details of two FCBD related events held at Kinokuniya's main store at Ngee Ann City are:

FCBD 2012: Store To Store - The Hunt for Free Comics!

FCBD at Kinokuniya
As most comic fans knew in advance about DC artists Nicola Scott and Ardian Syaf's store appearance at GnB Comics, visiting Rochor Centre early in the morning seemed to be the majority's FCBD strategy.

Red Dot Diva was actually torn between heading to Kinokuniya first and then down to GnB. But not knowing if one would be able to grab some time with Nicola and Ardian before their allotted signing sessions, became the primary decision-making factor. Also, she wasn't too keen to stay out the entire day for their later appearance at the Cathay.

(For Red Dot Diva's Nicola Scott experience at GnB - click here for the blog article!)

Most of the geeks also expected the larger book store, Kinokuniya to have been able to stock up more than ample stocks of comics. But unfortunately, when Red Dot Diva and a small group of comic fans were at the flagship Ngee Ann City store before 12pm, all the bundled packs for members (20 comics!! plus a box of Thor Heroclix) were GONE. :(

Major Disappoints.

FCBD 2012: Nicola Scott at GnB Comics

Yesterday's FCBD 2012 was one of those simply wonderful, geeky-fun days.

Even the Red Dot Island weather cooperated with this year's FCBD. It was not typically humid, with just the right mix of sunshine and cool breeze, making it perfect for a comic book hunt.

To kick-off FCBD 2012, Red Dot Diva dragged herself out of bed bright and early (although not as early as some, so she heard!!) at about 8 am. She stopped by at Bugis Junction's Toastbox for a much needed caffeine infusion with fellow geeks, Ryan (from Steel Reviews) and Melvin (a frequent contributor for HereBeGeeks), before they headed to GnB Comics nearby.

FCBD 2012: More Comic Book Geekery In Local Stores!

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is approaching and more details have surfaced from this year's participating stores.

After a successful FCBD debut last year, Kinokuniya returns as one of the stores involved in this Saturday's events. And they have made a couple of cool announcements.

Firstly, privilege card members will be able to get their stack of free comics when they produce their membership card at the Kinokuniya's Orchard Road flagship store! (Don't be greedy, Red Dot Diva warns. One set for each member only!) Also, specially for members, there is a 20% discount going on for all comics purchased!

In addition, Kinokuniya has added a more family-friendly theme by inviting the local Star Wars 501st Legion for a store appearance. What better way to kickstart your children's geek cred than by getting them to meet Star Wars characters??

New to the FCBD fray this year is Paradigm Infinitum (PI) - the #1 Board & Tabletop Games store in Singapore! The shop is located at #03-01 of Midpoint Orchard, just a hop away from Kinokuniya. Head to PI to help them celebrate the soft launch of their new graphic novels section. They will be giving all store visitors 10 free comics! The freebies may not be the official FCBD comic releases but why would anyone turn down some cool comics for free?!?

FCBD 2012: Avengers Movie Night, Special Guest Signings and Comic Books (Free Of Course, Duh!)

It is less than 2 weeks away to Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) 2012!

This special day is held on the 1st Saturday of May every year, and this year, Red Dot Island comic book fans are all set to celebrate the festivities on May 5th.

So far, "geek-boy-centric" comics book store GnB Comics has been the earliest to announce their FCBD guests and activities.

From 10 am to 1pm on 5th May, two special guests will be making an appearance for signings at their store at Block 1, Rochor Center, #02-500. Red Dot Diva says one will not be able to miss the shop. It will be the one with the longest line outside and a few cosplayers lurking around!

And.... if you are a DC fan, you would be over the moon for this year's FCBD. This is because GnB's special guests are comic book artists Nicola Scott and Ardian Syaf!

Free Comic Book Day - Tale of A Diva and A Kilt

Freebies from Kinokuniya
It was Free Comic Book Day last Saturday (May 7) - to the gleeful delight of comic book fans around the world.

The event was also celebrated on the Red Dot Island - with fun activities heating up in three local book stores!

In fact, the weather itself was relentlessly Hot and Humid that day. Red Dot Diva declared that it was almost nuclear, and she nearly melted into gooey glittery particles.

The day began with an early bus ride to Kinokuniya main book store at Orchard Road because there was the giveaway specially for members from 10 am to 12 pm. The simple collection booth was located at the "Crossroads" of the store, and when Red Dot Diva arrived at about 10.30 am or so, there was hardly anyone around!
