FCBD 2016: Diva's Annual Nerd Comic Book Run

Anyone who thinks you don't need to have stamina when you're a geek probably has not tried going for a Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) Run, Red Dot Island-style.

Not only does one have to persevere through the suffocating heat and humidity, you will need solid biceps and core strength to carry those free comic books from venue to venue.

For the last 5 years, Red Dot Diva has been going around the island's stores and hunting down comic books on FCBD. Since last year, she decided to target only two participating stores.

TARGET #1 - Kinokuniya Takashimaya
The night before, being typically kiasu, Red Dot Diva, Max and Jas had strategized to be at the Kinokuniya collection line early in the morning.

If you want to meet new friends, sign up at the cost of SGD 10 per pax, go put on your geek gear, head to the party and win some prizes!

It is also a good excuse to visit and have a DC Comics Superheroes Cafe experience if you have not been there yet.

FCBD 2014 - Hot Comics and Hot Guests On A Super Hot Day!

This year, Red Dot Diva's FCBD kicked off earlier than usual.

On Friday May 2, the night before FCBD, she joined several of GnB Comics' members and friends as well as their special comic book artist guests - Ivan Reis, Alan Quah and Sheldon Goh - at Shaw Lido for the movie screening of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" in 2D.

From what she heard, most of the guests had arrived in Red Dot Island only hours before the movie night, and Ivan Reis and his wife were practically transported immediately from airport to Shaw House for the event by the GnB folks.

NerdHQ At SDCC - Off-site Stomping Ground For The Geeks

What’s better than San Diego Comic Con (SDCC)?

Well, pretty much nothing that I can think of, but this year Zachary Levi from "Chuck" is going to try to provide us with a little off-site excitement. As fans of Zac probably already know, he is a huge geek. Like, first degree nerd. Which is probably part of the reason his fans love him so much.

He started The Nerd Machine, an online community where nerds from all over the world can come and geek out about the things that they’re most passionate. In addition, the can purchase NERD gear to let everyone know that they’re nerds and proud of it!

The Red Dot

Follow the intrepid Red Dot Diva as she takes you to various pop-culture and geeky news with that pinch of spicy local flavour.

Why the Red Dot, you ask?

You see, it was not too long ago that our tiny, busy, cosmopolitan island was hardly mentioned in business and pop culture references. We were not even known to be a country, with folks heartedly assuming that we were part of China, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan.. even the USA.

In previous political bickerings with our neighbours, we were also gloriously mocked as being "just a Red Dot".

When asked "Where is Singapore?", us hapless citizens could only sheepishly point at this tiny Red Dot on the world map, which was situated at tip of the Malaysian peninsular.

How times have changed! In recent years, our island has somehow seemed to gain a kind of "cool factor". We are still not as well-known as Japan or South Korea, but Singapore is now quite often referenced in movies and TV. C'mon, you can't say you did not know that Asian pirate captain Sao Feng from "Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End" resided and ruled his nefarious pirate kingdom in Singapore, did ya? (Pause for epic Red Dot moment here)

It also goes to show that being small doesn't mean you are powerless.

In her travels along the reality and interwebs dimensions, the Red Dot Diva will "Red Dot" some of her information, observations or discoveries. When something is "Red Dot"-ed, you know that the Red Dot Diva approves it ;)

So if you start seeing spots real soon, just remember to follow the Red ones!
