“The Art Behind the Game - The Ubisoft Experience" Exhibition Showcases Ubisoft Singapore's Creative Works

There have been art exhibitions hosted by game publishing company Ubisoft Singapore before, but the latest edition curated and designed by WY-TO, is the best one yet.

"The Art Behind the Game - The Ubisoft Experience" held at the National Design Centre, focuses on the Assassin's Creed franchise, which has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. One of the biggest selling game franchises of all time, Assassin's Creed offers its fans opportunities to take the "leap of faith" and fight for freedom.

The exhibition is held in partnership with DesignSingapore Council, as part of VOILAH! French Festival 2017. This year's VOILAH! festival's theme is about imagination and innovation, and the eye-catching Ubisoft event encapsulates these ideas perfectly.

Red Dot Diva attended a media preview of the exhibition earlier this week, and here are what you can expect at the event.

For starters, one simply cannot miss the biceptous, life-sized Connor Kenway statue standing guard at the entrance of the exhibition. Red Dot Diva is pretty sure he loves the attention so feel free to take many selfies with him.

There are 3 different parts for the exhibition: the history of Ubisoft, a showcase of the other memorable games produced by the company like "Prince of Persia", and finally, a tribute to Assassin's Creed, with displays of various behind the scenes aspects of the franchise.

Ubisoft Singapore has been involved with the franchise since "Assassin's Creed II". As the local team built up its resources and experience in the following years, the company became heavily involved with the "water technology" and ocean-based gameplay of "Assassin's Creed: Black Flag". So, naturally, a large part of the exhibition was related to this game title.

It is best to begin at the far right of the exhibition space where the Environment Design section is found. Here, one can view the research sketches of actual locations by the artists, and then examples of how these visual ideas were depicted in the form of paintings to be used for the game production later on.

The Story Boarding section comes next. There are a series of sketches showing actions and a sequence of events to help pre-visualize ideas for the game's storylines. There will also be a video montage of the story board images side by side with actual gameplay so that visitors can see how ideas have been translated to the final product.

In the Urban Environment Cities and Natural Environments segments, there are actual photos of the team at key locations as well as sketches and concept artwork relating to the architecture and scenes, like coastal beaches.

Gorgeous artwork of landscapes can be found here, as well as sketches by Associate Art Director of Ubisoft, Kobe Sek. According to Head of Communications Sylviane Bahr, Kobe draws many of such quick sketches while he is commuting to and from work on the MRT.

At this juncture, folks can either choose to wander further one to the Naval Design section or turn right again to check out the Fashion / Character Design huddle.

Red Dot Diva has a thing for the Character Design section as there are many portraits of pirates, including one awesome one of Blackbeard. Bad bad pirates are so darn sexy. :D

The Sound Booth that is next to the Fashion/ Character Design area is also very interesting, with lyrics of songs painted all around. Visitors will be able to listen to the many sea shantys featured in the games and watch a video of the foley artists finding ways to create and record sounds that would be used for the game. For instance, splashes during fights held in water, steamboats, anchor chains or whale sounds.

Here's a sneak peek of the fascinating video:

A post shared by Red Dot Diva (@reddotdiva) on

The sound work for Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and Syndicate were done in Singapore, and Ms. Bahr mentioned that oftentimes, staff members were called in to record as part of crowd voices, depending on what kind of accent was needed.

The spacious Naval Design section wraps up the tail end of the Assassin's Creed section, and if you have a thing for ships and vessels, this is the area you should go for.

There is a visual map of different types of ships depicting their scale in relation to each other as well as the size of a human being. The same was done with marine life, like whales and sharks.

Apparently, the first version of the shark looked "too nice" (chibi shark? hahaha) so the artists added more blood and muscle to it. And then, hunky shredded sharky seemed to bulky so they sharpened its fins for speed. Voilah, mega killer shark for the game!

Intricate drawings and plans were also done for the interior of ships! The design were done in Singapore, with the artists working with historians so that the vessels will look as authentic as possible.

Visualizations of sea battles were also painted. These four paintings were done by artists based in Singapore and Montreal, and yet they looked amazingly similar.

In niches here and there around the booths, Assassin's Creed fans have a thrill recognizing original game cases and detailed sculpted figurines like these two:

The exhibition wraps off with a cubicle about the Ubisoft family, and the Singapore teams contributed to the space by adding photos, doodles, humourous notes and several office in-jokes. "We are serious about fun," Sylvaine Bahr chuckled.

Red Dot Diva does not play video games at all, but she still enjoyed the exhibition tremendously because she appreciates the creativity and hard work that goes into productions like these. The flow of the exhibit feels organic and does its job grabbing one's attention visually at every turn.

If you already enjoy Ubisoft's game titles, especially Assassin's Creed, then you should not miss checking out this exhibition! There are many beautiful masterpieces to gawk at and a few interesting multimedia activities to enjoy, so one could geek out for a good hour or so, and it's all FREE!

Get Up Close To "Game of Thrones" Pencil Microsculptures by Salavat Fidai at K+ - 22 April to 4 June 2017

HBO's insanely popular TV series "Game of Thrones" is known for portraying scenes on a grand majestic scale. As Season 7 is set to return to our screens on 17 July 2017, the battle for the Iron Throne is expected to get more intense.

However, to promote the upcoming new season, HBO Asia is offering fans a chance to view Westeros in a whole different level - a very tiny level to be exact. The company has specially commissioned Russian artist/ sculptor Salavat Fidai to carve a series of microsculptures on the tips of graphic pencil leads!

16 of these astoundingly intricate carvings will be on display at K+ Curatorial Space this coming weekend till 4 June, and it is free to attend! The sculptures include iconic images like the White Walker, Hand of the King, various different house sigils, Drogon, Three-Eyed Raven, the Oathkeeper and more!

Game of Thrones Season 7 Arrives on HBO Asia 17 July 2017, 9 AM

Winter is Coming. And so is War!

After that shocking "Game of Thrones" S6 season finale where a whole bunch of people went Kaboom!, the cruel and scheming Cersei ended up being crowned as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. From then on, things are just going to get more intense.

The convergence of the different houses in Season 7 will unfold in just seven episodes as the different players focus on King's Landing. This is ominously depicted in the first official teaser made entirely of sigils belonging to the main Houses at play - the Lannisters, the Targaryens, the Starks, the Baratheons and the Tyrells, plus one more powerful game changer - the White Walkers.

Will the Great Wall hold? Or will it all come tumbling down?

Diva Checked Out The Official F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Central Perk Cafe in Singapore!

The Official F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Central Perk Cafe finally opens to the public today, 26 November 2016, from 6 PM to 10 PM.

If you can't make it on its first day, the cafe (aptly located at the ground floor of Central Mall; the shop front faces Magazine Road) operates from Tuesdays to Sunday, from 10 AM to 10 PM.

After a rousing and successful crowdfunding project, the journey of bringing the fictional Central Perk Cafe to existence has its share of ups and downs. Generally, Red Dot Island fans who remember and watch the TV series were joyous when Jit Min, founder of the passion project, shared that he was looking for a suitable space for the cafe. However, a few months later, the brickbats came fast and furious when a very atas-sounding SGD 1,000 membership package was announced.

"Is this going to be a scam?" cried many cynical folks. With a couple of notably unfortunate incidences recently (*coughHelloKittycough*), Red Dot Diva is not surprised that some people felt that way. Especially when the owners were tight-lipped about providing more details at that time.

Regardless of the naysayers, there were more than enough fans who were eager to see Red Dot Island get their very own Central Perk Cafe.

Diva's Movie Review: "Hunt for the WilderPeople" Is A Clever and Superb Buddy Movie

With many of the social media timelines filled with friends who have polarizing views about the results of the USA election, perhaps there is need for some time out. A feel-good kind of time out.

Watching "Hunt for the WilderPeople", a New Zealand film written and directed by Taika Waititi, is a heartwarming panacea for all the angsty, angry discussions taking place on the internet right now. It provides assurance that a genuine friendship can be formed even when two human beings are very different from each other. Logical Red Dot Diva knows that this does not happen easily in real life, but movie escapism can sometimes be good for mental health. ;)

"Hunt for the WilderPeople" is essentially a hilarious buddy dramedy with a quirky take on the fugitives on the run trope. The movie focuses on the adventures of two unlikely characters - chubby, orphaned, city street kid Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison) who thinks he's a hip hop thug and his grumpy over-60 ex-prisoner/ farmer/ super-bushman foster uncle Hec Faulkner (a very silver foxy Sam Neill).

HBO Asia's "Westworld" Premieres 3 October 2016 - Man vs Machine in the Wild, Wild West

When best-selling author Michael Crichton passed away in 2008, Red Dot Diva was utterly devastated. She was a big fan of his writing and have devoured several of his geeky scifi, medical, techno-thriller-based books - "Jurassic Park", "Timeline" and "Prey" being her favourites - with relish. Many of Michael Crichton's stories were set in a not too distant future and hence, they were like a chilling warning of possible outcomes due to medical or technological advances. It was a little like Black Mirror before there was Black Mirror.

So, when HBO announced that they will be adapting Michael Crichton's "Westworld" movie to a TV series, Red Dot Diva whooped with joy. The 10-episode series, produced by J.J. Abrams, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, has attracted a cast of fine and award-winning actors including Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris (mmmmmmmm... another of Red Dot Diva's favourites), Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, Rodrigo Santoro, Clifton Collins, Jr., Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Tessa Thompson and Sidse Babett Knudse.

AsiaPop Comic Con Manila (APCC Manila) kicks off later today with its second edition. The 3-day convention will see fans in Manila mingling with celebrities, comic book guests, cosplayers, and have fun participating in other activities, like panels, meet and greets and autograph sessions.

This year's celebrity guest roll includes Nicholas Hoult of the "X-Men" franchise, "Warm Bodies" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" fame, young breakout star Millie Bobby Brown known for her memorable role as Eleven in Netflix's "Stranger Things", Claire Holt of "The Vampire Diaries" and Joe Dempsie who is most familiar to fans as Gendry in the international hit series, "Game of Thrones".

However, as the convention is still called a "Comic Con", a few comic book artists have also been invited as guests. One of them is reknown illustrator Mike Zeck, whose various definitive artwork have impressed fans' visual psyche through the many years of his career. Mike Zeck has also worked on covers for several DC Comic books like "Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight" and in recent times, for the "Deathstroke the Terminator" series.

Meet Elvin Ching, Artist of Singapore NDP 2016's Comic About Local Superhero, Badang!

The fortunate people who scored tickets to the National Day Parade (NDP) 2016 rehearsal parades last week and this weekend will get to watch a preview of re-enactment about the legend of Badang.

Badang was a local and hunky (he must be, right?) Malay superhero around about the 14th century. Story was that, he defended his village and Singapura from many challengers, including the ruler of India and Java. From one of the notable challenges, Badang managed to throw a large rock into the sea, near the mouth of the Singapore River.

One of the fragments, consisting of ancient inscriptions, resides in the National Museum of Singapore. It is called the Singapore Stone.

Included in the goodie bag for attendees of the parade rehearsals and NDP 2016, there will be a little comic adaptation by well-known writer Michael Chiang ("Army Daze"/ "Beauty World") and illustrated by a talented local artist named Elvin Ching, who has done artwork for the MacDonald's "Samurai Burger Returns" commercials.

Also, check out his bicepstuous cover artwork of the "The Legend of Badang" comic above. Red Dot Diva loves the way he made Badang looked determined and gallantly heroic.

Red Dot Diva knows people who knows Elvin Ching. So, she tracked him down and inflicted a list of her trademark nosy questions on him.

Rihanna Warp Drives into "Star Trek Beyond" with "Sledgehammer" - Music Video Debuts in IMAX Theatres 6 July!

Red Dot Diva digs some of mega pop star Rihanna's tunes from time to time, but when she heard her latest song "Sledgehammer" featured in the new "Star Trek Beyond" trailer, Diva thought it was such a perfect fit! Her sultry vocals in the haunting melody provided the other-worldly, uplifting feel that the Trek franchise is known for.

Don't believe it? Check out the trailer here:

Visual Effects Artists from Lucasfilm Singapore Spill Some "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" Secrets

As part of the May the Fourth celebration earlier this month, Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) - whose regional headquarters is at the Sandcrawler in Red Dot Island - hosted a special hour-long panel at the Sports Hub Library about the Oscar-nominated visual effects (VFX) featured in "The Force Awakens".

Red Dot Diva has attended a few Lucasfilm ILM panels about their VFX work in other movies before, but never for Star Wars, due to the fact that "The Force Awakens" is the first Star Wars movie released after 10 years. Being an avid Star Wars fan, she could not pass up the chance on learning more about the magic that happened behind the scenes.

(Warning: If you think that knowing more about VFX work spoils your enjoyment of the movie, then *loud signal blares*... DO NOT PROCEED. Feel free to click here and read another article about what other fun things happened during the May the Fourth Celebration instead.)

The panel, moderated by Dominic Zou from 501st Legion SG, started off easily enough with an introduction of the four homegrown artists involved with the movie: Associate Production Manager - Pei'an Lau, Lead for Rotoscoping and Paint - JeanLe Koh, Lead for Texturing and Look Development - Elvin Siew and Animator - Zaini Jalani.

May The Fourth 2016: A Heartfelt Fan Celebration of All Things Star Wars

The gathering was not held on May the Fourth itself, since that will be a working Wednesday, and Red Dot Island fans are practical folks who do need to clock into their day jobs.

However, the May the Fourth event that kicked off earlier today at OCBC Square, Singapore Sports Hub, was a good way to get your Star Wars fix. At least until the next Resistance.

Team Cap Armed with Quips at "Captain America: Civil War" South-East Asia Press Conference, Singapore

Mostly, it was Anthony Mackie who was firmly locked and loaded with quips and trash talk in a show of rivalry against Team Iron-Man. However, the beardy but very hunky Chris Evans was all charms at the "Captain America: Civil War" South-East Asia press conference held at Marina Bay Sands, Red Dot Island on the morning of 21 April 2016.

The press conference was attended by cast members Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, who was accompanied by Joe Russo, one half of the movie's directing team. The team flew in from another press junket in Beijing, China which had no time difference from Red Dot Island, so if they had suffered any jet lag, it did not seem noticeable at all.

Singapore Fans Sing Happy Birthday to Game of Thrones' Actor Isaac Hemsptead-Wright at ION Orchard!

Judging by the love showered upon "Game of Thrones" actor Isaac Hemsptead-Wright during his appearance at ION Orchard yesterday (2 April), it seems the local fans have sorely missed seeing Bran Stark in the drama's previous season.

The audience has practically seen the young actor grow up on screen as Bran. However, the young noble had been missing for the entire Season 5.

At that point, Bran's story had mostly caught up with what had happened in George R.R. Martin's books. The other reason: Bran was undergoing some Westeros-Harry Potter-style training with the mysterious shifu Three-Eyed Raven.

In the new season, there will be more Bran Stark (YAYY!!) and even better still, more handsome badass Bran Stark (W00t, W00t!).

When Red Dot Diva arrived at the venue 45 minutes before Isaac Hemsptead-Wright's scheduled 3PM appearance, hundreds of fans were already waiting patiently at the surrounding area. About 50 Starhub contest winners were also within the holding area, as they will get a chance to meet him in person later on.

Singtel x Netflix Meet & Greet: Diva Shook Hands with "Daredevil" Charlie Cox!

Comic book superheroes seem to be putting Red Dot Island as part of their travel plans this year!

This week, Charlie Cox, star of Netflix's highly lauded Marvel superhero TV Series "Daredevil", dropped by for a few days to meet the media, including a "top secret event" with Harpers Bazaar Singapore. Then, on 28 March early evening, a selected group consisting of 50 pairs of Singnet's subscribers got the chance to meet at Charlie at Comcentre's Singtel Shop!

Thanks to the awesome guys from Here Be Geeks and Singtel's representative, Red Dot Diva had a surprise opportunity to attend the session. How can one say NO to a chance to meet Charlie Cox?!

Artist of "The Zodiac Legacy" Book Series Andie Tong Meets Fans at Kinokuniya

Locally, there are still many who are not familiar with Singapore-based artist Andie Tong, but Red Dot Diva is pretty sure this is going to change very soon due to the success of his work with Disney's illustrated book series "The Zodiac Legacy", created by the legendary Stan Lee, and co-written by Stuart Moore. It is also Stan Lee's first illustrated book series.

"The Zodiac Legacy" is about the power of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac that have been unleashed all around the world. Chinese-American teenager Steven Lee absorbs the power of the Tiger and gets caught up with the whirlwind of events battling with the Vanguard - a group of mercenaries - who are trying to collect the powers from other hosts and use them for their own selfish means.

The action-packed first book "Convergence" was launched in early 2015. The follow-up book entitled "The Dragon's Return" was released last month, and was listed as a NYT best-seller for Children's Middle-Grade Hardcover!

Andie has worked in Australia and the UK, and is well-known with regular comic conventions goers around the world. He is definitely a familiar face to those who attend STGCC, and Red Dot Diva notices that his booth is usually swamped with fans.

Spy On Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie in "The Night Manager" premiering on AMC Asia, 22 February 2016

When it comes to Tom Hiddleston, Red Dot Diva cannot get enough of his undeniable charisma and screen presence. There is still no release date in Red Dot Island for his next movie "High Rise", so Red Dot Diva is delighted that she is able to swoon over Hiddles tomorrow night instead.

"The Night Manager" TV series is based on the John le Carré spy novel of the same name. A hotel manager goes undercover for an intelligence agency in a bid to take down an international criminal and arms dealer. While doing so, he becomes untangled in a dangerous game of secrets that also involve corrupt officials from both the CIA and MI-6. Unlike the book where the story unfolds in the post-Cold War era, the show is set in modern times, with most of the action taking place in the exotic locale of Cairo, Egypt.

Teaser Trailer & Poster of Equals - A Movie Filmed in Singapore, Starring Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart

Other than the over-hyped action movie "Hitman: Agent 47" that was filmed partially in Red Dot Island last year, there was another indie film that featured the island's futuristic architecture during its production.

The movie, called "Equals", is a sci-fi story set in an utopian future. It is directed by Drake Doremus ("Like Crazy") stars Nicholas Hoult, Kristen Stewart, Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver. Most of the filming seems to have taken place within Infinite Studios, but the famous young stars Nicholas Hoult and Kirsten Stewart as well as the crew had been spotted in locations like the Marina Badge, the uber-atas Reflections condominium at Keppel Bay, Henderson Waves and the One North MRT station.

In "Equals", human emotions (yep, that includes sexy time) have been eradicated in society but when a virus infection breaks out suddenly and causes people to feel again. Cue minutes of erotic, longing moments between the good-looking leads KStew and Nicholas Hoult.
